World's Best-Selling German Beer

Beck’s is a brewery located in the northwest German city of Bremen and was founded in 1873. Beck’s ranks fifth among Germany’s best selling breweries. Since Beck’s is located on the river of a port city, it was easy to ship its beer to the world at large and become an international beer powerhouse. Different by choice, Beck’s claims to be the world’s best selling German beer.

The World’s Oldest Monastery Brewery

If you didn’t know, the 39th Annual Oktoberfest @ Tempe Town Lake is produced and sponsored by Tempe Sister City Corporation (501C3). Regensburg, Germany and Tempe have been sister cities since 1976. We are proud to host, for the first time, the Weltenburger Kloster brand of German beer. The best part is that Weltenburger is brewed in Regensbugs, Bavaria, Germany. We thank the fine folks from Republic National Distributing Company for making this happen. Prost!

Weltenburg Abbey was founded at the beginning of the 7th century. The first indicators for the existence of a brewery in the Weltenburg Abby can be found in the necrology which states that in 1035 the Master Brewer died. A second scientific source brings into focus the year 1050. During the last millennium until today the monastic beer production in Weltenburg has been interrupted only due to Napoleon Bonaparte from 1803 – 1846. Therefore, Weltenburg Abbey Brewery can be rightly referred to as the oldest Abbey Brewery in the world.

Oktoberfest, Weltenburger Kloster - Beer Lineup:

Weltenburger Kloster (Abbey), Barock Dunkel

Pours a lovely dark brown with a distinct ruby at its core. On the palate it has a fine mouth-filling texture and plenty of chewy, malty, brown bread and caramel flavors. There is some sweetness here, but the good levels of hop bitterness and acidity balance and this is another very fine beer indeed from this brewery. The search for this special balance has paid off: Weltenburger Kloster Barock Dunkel was presented the “World Best Beer Award” as the best dark beer in the world in 2004 and 2008. Alcohol: 4.7%

Weltenburger Kloster, Barock Hell

From the world’s oldest monastery brewery in Bavaria, this rich full-bodied pilsner is beautifully clean with a fairly complex aromatic profile of fruit with lemon and some straw like aroma. Alcohol: 5.6%

Weltenburger Kloster, Winter-Traum

The Worlds Oldest Continuously Operating Brewery

The Weihenstephan Brewery can trace its roots at the abbey to the year 768, as a document from that year refers to a hop garden in the area paying tithe to the monastery. A brewery was actually licensed by the City of Freising in 1040, and that is the founding date claimed by today’s modern brewery. The brewery thus has a credible claim to being the oldest working brewery in the world.

When the monastery and brewery were secularized under Napoleon Bonaparte in 1803, they became possessions of the State of Bavaria. Since 1923, the brewery has been known as the Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan and is operated in conjunction with the Technical University of Munich as both a state-of-the-art production facility and a center for learning.

Oktoberfest, Weihenstephan - Beer Lineup:

Weihenstephaner, Hefe Weissbier

Weihenstaphner, Korbinian

Rich and very enticing aromas of sweet, earthy malts, caramel, toffee, plums, sugary nuts and chocolate. Mellow, but very deep at the same time. So convincingly drinkable, yet does not scream high alcohol content despite the 7.4% alcohol by volume. Das good!

Weihenstaphaner, Hefe Dunkel (Dark)

The beer is chestnut brown and very hazy. Slightly sweeter than the hefeweizen it is full of flavor, well balanced and easy to drink. The banana, malt, yeast, and bread flavors mingle beautifully. Alcohol: 5.3%

Weihenstephaner, Kristall Hefe

Wow! Some of the best carbonation of any beer. Big mix of taste/styles but one doesn’t dominate over the other. Definitely a good change of pace and a good transition beer.
